University of Southampton
Dates back to 1862 when the Hartley Institution, as it was originally known, was established in the centre of Southampton.
Hartley Institution became Hartley University College and moved out of the city centre in 1919.
Received its Royal Charter to award degrees and became the University of Southampton in April 1952.
Location and Transport
South coast of England, close to the New Forest and the Isle of Wight. Just over one hour by train from London.
Main campus north of city centre, adjacent to Southampton Common's 326 acres of managed woodland.
Excellent road, rail, sea and air links. Southampton Airport nearby. University-owned bus service, uni-link, provides transport across the city. For students living and studying in Southampton, a uni-link bus pass is included in the cost of halls accommodation.
