Where is it?

The University of Manchester is a public research university located in the city and the single largest campus in the country as a result of the merge between the University of Manchester Institute of Science (est. 1956) and Technology and the Victoria University of Manchester. The former was initially founded in 1824 within the Mechanics' Institute whilst the latter was established by the charter in 1904, prior to which originated in Owens College (est. 1851) before the dissolution of the federal Victoria University. Due to the long and rich history, the University of Manchester is regarded as a 'red brick university'.

Manchester is right in the heart of North West England, making it the perfect spot to be if you are eager to see more of the UK as it does not only have a convenient railway link but also an international airport that connects the city the city to the rest of Europe and beyond.

Since its establishment, the university has become a popular choice among home students and also for students from all over the world, attracting one of the highest numbers of international students per year. Indeed, their international students hail from 140 countries, including China and Malaysia.

Throughout the history, the University of Manchester has produced a whole string of successful alumni, including acclaimed Hollywood actor Benedict Cumberbatch, physicist and science TV programme present Brian Cox, resident BBC film critic Mark Kermode, comedian Jack Whitehall and plenty more successful individuals in their respective field.

 

Statistics and rankings?

Currently ranked 33rd in the world by QS World University Rankings 2015-16, the University of Manchester is also regularly placed in the very top percentage of all the UK universities. In the 2015 Academic Ranking of World Universities, Manchester is ranked 41st in the world and 5th in the UK. Furthermore, it is ranked joint 56th in the world and 18th in Europe in the 2015-16 Times Higher Education World University Rankings.

It is recognised globally for the quality and volume of their pioneering research, the University of Manchester was rated ‘world-leading’ or ‘internationally excellent’ in the 2014 Research Excellence Framework (REF) scoring an impressive 83% in terms of their research activity, placing it fifth. In fact, the breadth of their research activity is second to none in the UK as they attracted more than £280 million in external research funding as of 2012/13, proving it to be a strong, reputable research centre in the UK and the world.
